Raw material supply to packers of Thai pineapple has dropped sharply in the last two weeks, to below 50% of what was expected, and much of the fruit received is not ripe. Price of the raw material jumped from 6-6.50 baht to 7+ baht. Packers’ sales prices have risen in accordance in the last few days.
Weather in northern Thailand is cold, and even Bangkok is unusually cool. This is affecting not only pineapple, but also sweet kernel corn, baby corn and other seasonal plants.
Still uncertain is whether this will open the door for Chinese and Vietnamese pineapple, which had been higher-priced than the Thai.
